Update on the Visor Group

by

Moira Thomson (Visor Group member)

Last year the Visor Group went to Blackpool for their annual holiday, staying at the Norbreck Castle Hotel. The hotel was massive but the food was lovely. All rooms had coloured television and en-suite bathrooms, as well as tea and coffee making facilities. Unfortunately meals were all self-service but wonderful. We had a day trip to Southport and a trip to Fleetwood market. This was excellent and the market had lots of really good stalls. Since then we have had a few new members join the group that we are very pleased about.

Visor Group activities this year have included a trip to the Glenfarg Folk Fest that was an excellent night out. We have also recently started a walking group that meets on a fairly regular basis. The Visor Group also meets regularly for tea/coffee and a chat in a variety of Perth venues. Our members seem to enjoy meals out, Ten Pin Bowling, The Glenfarg Folk Club; both young and old alike enjoy these.

The Visor Group holiday this year will be to Llandudno in Wales where we will be staying at the Marine Hotel that is situated right next to the promenade. The cost of this holiday is £180.00 that is everything included other than spending money. The holiday will be from the 11th -15th July 2011.

Any one wishing to join the Visor group should contact David Miller on 07521- 428081. At present membership is £20 a year.

The Scottish Mental Health Co-operative was formally launched at The Scottish Parliament on April 20th 2010. It is a unified body representing local not for profit organisations who specialise in providing mental health services in their respective localities. The co-op provides a mechanism to effectively represent local people's views at a National level in order to have meaningful influence on Mental Health related developments. We at PAMH are pleased to be members of this new venture.

PAMH now has a beautiful new garden!!

The following appeared in the Dundee Courier

Prince's Trust Volunteers Deliver Goods on Garden

After two weeks of back-breaking work the members of Dundee College Prince's Trust team in Perth have officially handed over the new-look garden at the Milne Street HQ of the Perth Association for Mental Health.

The gardens were overgrown before the team set about clearing and levelling the ground, laying new paths and planting shrubs and trees.

Great care was also taken to ensure that there is now access for visitors of all abilities.  As the team's community project had to be completed in two weeks there were no lay-offs for bad weather.

"We quickly discovered that hard work doesn't get any easier when it is raining," said team leader Vicky Mair.  "The garden was a complete jungle before we started but now, thanks to the team's hard work and support from a number of rims, we have been able to lay paths, paint the masonry, put down chips and complete the soft landscaping with plants."

The team raised cash to help finance the project with a sponsored leg wax.

They officially handed the finished garden back to the Association and, in an informal ceremony, had their efforts recognised by the charity's representative, Alastair Jamieson.

The Prince's Trust team programme is aimed at preparing those taking part for that vital "next step" into employment or further education.

The 12-week project helps people aged between 16 and 25 develop confidence, learn new skills and get into work as well as bringing together people from different backgrounds and circumstances and with different abilities.

Trainee social worker, Heather Allison said, "Perth Association for Mental Health are very grateful for the help of the Prince's Trust volunteers in renovating our garden area and improving access for people with limited mobility."

The Association continues to benefit from the useful input provided by volunteers and we're always looking for people to help.

"We are currently looking for volunteers to serve on our board and if any readers feel they can help please contact us on  01738 ...."
